BEMIDJI, Minn. (Chet Anderson Stadium) -- Bemidji State University junior defender and reigning Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Defensive Player of the Week Miranda Famestad netted two goals to help lead the Beavers to a 4-0 victory over Northern Michigan, Friday at Chet Anderson Stadium.

Famestad and BSU defensive unit faced 12 shots on the night and goalkeeper Anna Fobbe made a save on the Wildcats' only shot on goal to record her first shutout of 2016.

Rachael Norton opened BSU's scoring in the third minute of play, netting her third goal of the season when Sarah Stram crossed the ball off the far post. Norton was on the doorstep to slip her third goal of the season past the NMU goalkeeper. Famestad gave the Beavers a 2-0 lead in the 33rd minute and stretched the Beavers' lead to 3-0 in the 61st minute.  The second came on a free kick from the top of the 18-yard box. Stram finished the scoring in the 67th minute when she got behind the NMU backline and patiently stepped around the Wildcat goalkeeper for her first goal of 2016.

BSU improves to 3-0 on the young season and hosts Michigan Tech at noon Sunday to wrap up nonconference play. 

Just three matches into the 2016 season, BSU has outscored its opponents 13-2 and has two players, Famestad and Norton, who have two goals, while senior forward Bayley Ertl leads the team in scoring with two goals and three assists.
