WINONA, Minn. (Warrior Stadium) – The Bemidji State University Soccer teams scored three times during the first 30 minutes of play Friday to separate itself from Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference foe and nationally-ranked Winona State University and open the weekend of competition with a 3-2 victory at Warrior Stadium.
Senior captain Bayley Ertl got the BSU scoring machine on track in the fourth minute of play, netting her team-best fifth goal of 2016 when a shot from teammate Raquel Thelen caromed off a defender. Thelen followed suit in the 29th minute lifting a left-footed kick into the top right corner to beat the Warrior goalkeeper for her second goal of the season. Twenty-four seconds later, in the 30th minute, freshman Emma Brechlin logged her first collegiate point on a breakaway.
The Beavers would take the 3-0 lead into the second half and the 50th minute, but Abby Bohanski would spoil the shutout on a deflected corner kick. She would add her second goal of the game in the 78th minute of play, but that was all the offense of No. 19 WSU muster as the BSU defense clamped down.
Winona State finished the game with a 15-9 edge in shots on goal, while the teams were tied with five shots on goal apiece.
Anna Fobbe faced five shots and made two saves behind the BSU backline to improve to 3-0-0 on the season.
The Beavers, now 4-1 overall and 2-0 in NSIC play, travel to Fayette, Iowa Sunday for a 1 p.m. NSIC matchup with Upper Iowa University.
