BSU completes unbeaten regular season with 4-1 win over St. Cloud State

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Chet Anderson Stadium) -- The Bemidji State University soccer team completed an unbeaten regular season with a 4-1 victory over St. Cloud State University Sunday at Chet Anderson Stadium. The victory clinches second place in the NSIC standings and assures the No. 15 Beavers the right to host the first round of the conference tournament Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.

Five different BSU players contributed to the scoring with Norton, Mattson and Thelen each posting a goal and an assist, with Mattson credited with the game-winning goal.

Smith got the Beavers on the board in the fifth minute. Alanna Mattson slid a pass through the Huskies’ midfield and to Smith beat the SCSU back line to the ball and struck the ball from 15 yards out. Mattson put the Beavers up 2-0 in the 17th minute on an tremendous individual effort. She dribbled the ball through the SCSU defense and tucked a shot inside the left post.

The Beavers started the second half with a two-goal cushion.

After SCSU cut the BSU lead in half in the 52nd minute when Hannah Marion buried a rebound off the cross bar for her fifth goal of the season. 

Raquel Thelen and the Beavers responded in the 69th minute when the senior midfielder corralled the ball off the foot of Norton and deposited her fifth goal of 2017 into a virtually empty net. Norton would complete the scoring in the 76th minute.  Thelen and Miranda Famstad assisted on the junior's league-leading 12th goal of the season.

Catherine Arneson turned aside five of the six shots she faced to earn her seventh win of the season (7-0-2).

The victory guarantees the Beavers second place in the final Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference standings. The Beavers (12-0-3 NSIC) trail Minnesota State University, Mankato (13-1-1 NSIC) by one point as the Mavericks posted a 2-0 win over Winona State University today to claim the league’s regular-season title.

The No. 2 seed in the upcoming NSIC Tournament will host their first round match at Chet Anderson Stadium Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. Their opponent, the No. 7 seed, is to be determined.

Nestled in Northern Minnesota’s wooded region and located on the shore of Lake Bemidji, Bemidji State University sponsors 15 varsity athletic programs with NCAA Division I men’s and women’s hockey membership in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, while its 13 NCAA Division II programs hold membership in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
