Bemidji State defeats Winona State, 3-2, to advance to NSIC semifinal

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Chet Anderson Stadium) -- No. 14 Bemidji State University scored two first-half goals and held off a second-half charge by Winona State University, 3-2, to punch it's ticket to the semifinal round of the 2017 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament.

Rachael Norton scored twice, Dani Nelson added a goal and an assist and Raquel Thelen piled up two assists to account for BSU's offense, while goalkeeper Catherine Arneson posted six saves, while allowing two goals, to post her eighth victory of the season (8-0-2).

BSU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute when Allyson Smith split two WSU defenders with a pass that left Norton alone with only the Warrior goalkeeper to beat. The NSIC’s leading scorer was up to the challenge and netted her 13th goal of the season. Nelson was also credited with an assist on the play.

The BSU lead swelled to 2-0 less than four minutes later. Nelson was on the receiving end of a pass from Raquel Thelen, who recorded the first of a game-high two assists on the play. Nelson beat the Winona State goalkeeper to the ball and tapped in her sixth goal of 2017.

The Beavers went into halftime holding a 2-0 lead, but Norton quickly put BSU up 3-0. In the 51st minute, the junior scored her 14th goal of the season with Thelen and Emily Kos getting credit for assists on the play.

The got interesting for BSU from there as the Beavers were out shot 12-2 with eight shots on goal.

In the 57th minute, WSU's Camryn Cadiz took a shot out of a scrum in front of the BSU goal and found the back of the net. Nineteen seconds later (56:24), BSU was whistled for a foul on the outer edge of the box, setting up the Warriors with a penalty kick. Abby Bohanski made good on the attempt to pull the Warriors within a goal, 3-2, with 33 minutes to play.

The Beavers and Arneson weathered the storm and escaped with a 3-2 win.

Bemidji State (15-0-3) now advances to the NSIC Tournament semifinal round where it will play the No. 3 seed Augustana University Friday in Mankato, Minn. Augie defeated Concordia University-St. Paul in its semifinal match. The top seed Minnesota State University, Mankato, which defeated the University of Minnesota Duluth in a shoot out, will play the winner of the University of Mary-Minot State University quarterfinal Friday with the NSIC Tournament Championship set for 2 p.m. Sunday in Mankato, Minn.
