Smith scores twice to lead BSU past MSU Moorhead

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Chet Anderson Stadium) – Allyson Smith scored twice and added an assist, while Rachael Norton posted a goal and an assist to lead the Bemidji State University soccer team to a 6-1 victory over Minnesota State University Moorhead Sunday at Chat Anderson Stadium.

The victory extends BSU’s unbeaten streak to 11 matches as BSU improves to 10-0-1 overall and 8-0-1 in league play to remain atop the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference standings.

The Beavers got on the board in the sixth minute when Miranda Famestad connected on a header from Natalie Engle and Tia Neuharth. Just nine minutes later, BSU lead would its double when Smith cut past a defender and drilled the fourth goal of the season with her left foot. Norton and Emily Kos were credited with assists on the play.

The Dragons came charging back in the 35th minute. Marie Griffith was credited with the goal from Jessica Dallman. It was just the second goal the Beavers have allowed this season and the first since Sept. 17—a streak of 526 minutes and seventh matches.

Before the half would end, Brenna Keeler was the beneficiary of a perfectly placed flip toss from Sydney Bethke and great pass from Antonia Bailey and BSU took a 3-1 lead into the locker room.

The Beavers doubled the score in second half, getting goals from Norton, Dani Nelson and Smith.

Fobbe finished the day making one save on two shots faced to improve to 6-0-1 in the season.

The Beavers remain home for the next week as they host Wayne State College Saturday and Augustana University Sunday in NSIC action.  The opening kick for each match is set for 1 p.m. at Chet Anderson Stadium.

Nestled in Northern Minnesota’s wooded region and located on the shore of Lake Bemidji, Bemidji State University sponsors 15 varsity athletic programs with NCAA Division I men’s and women’s hockey membership in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, while its 13 NCAA Division II programs hold membership in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
