MINOT, N.D. (Herb Parker Field) -- Bemidji State senior Dani Nelson broke a 0-0 tie in the 89th minute Thursday skipping a free kick past the Oklahoma Baptist goalkeeper to give the Beavers 1-0 victory to open the 2018 season.
After a scoreless first half, the Beavers controlled play for most of the second, out shooting the Bison 6-2 in the final 45 minutes. The pressure would pay off for the patient Beavers as Nelson was awarded with a free kick from 28 yards out. After skirting the OBU wall, the ball skipped the outreached hands of the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
BSU finished the game out shooting the Bison 11-4 and held a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.
In goal, senior Anna Fobbe was perfect turning aside each of the four shots she faced to collect the 22nd win of her career and her first shutout of 2018.
The Beavers, now 1-0-0, return to Bemidji, Minn. and Chet Anderson Stadium at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday to open the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference season versus the University of Minnesota Crookston.
