Fobbe, Norton push No. 5 Beavers to match a program record for wins

WAYNE, Neb. (WSC Soccer Field) – Rachael Norton scored twice and added an assist, while Anna Fobbe recorded her eighth shutout of the season to lead the No. 5 Bemidji State University Soccer Team to a 3-0 victory Friday at Wayne State College. The victory was the Beavers 15th straight and matches a BSU single-season program record for wins.

Bemidji State took the lead in the 29th minute when Norton took a pass from Melanie Peltier and beat the goalkeeper one-on-one.

BSU would take the 1-0 lead into the halftime break, but would need less than five minutes to double it. Norton found Alanna Mattson with a pass. The sophomore forward found an opening and buried a shot from 12 yards out. It was her third goal of the season.

BSU would find the back of the net again in the 55 minute when BSU forced its fourth corner kick of the match. Norton put her head on the Peltier corner for the first header goal of her career.

Already BSU’s career leader in goals scored, Norton’s 16th goal of the season brings her to within one of the single-season record (17) held by Katie Mienhardt (2004).

Anna Fobbe collected three saves en route to establishing a new program record for single-season shutouts. She also moves to 15-0-0 and surpasses her own BSU single-season wins record.

The Beavers, now 15-0-0 travel to Sioux Falls, S.D. Sunday for a 1 p.m. match up with Augustana University. The game will serve as a rematch of last seasons NCAA Regional semifinal, where the Vikings and Beavers battled through two overtime periods locked in a 0-0 tie.  Augie advanced after defeating BSU in a shootout.

Nestled in Northern Minnesota’s wooded region and located on the shore of Lake Bemidji, Bemidji State University sponsors 15 varsity athletic programs with NCAA Division I men’s and women’s hockey membership in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, while its 13 NCAA Division II programs hold membership in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
