Bemidji State clinches as least a share of NSIC title with 4-0 win over MSU Moorhead

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Chet Anderson Stadium) -- Rachael Norton and Allyson Smith each scored twice and Norton added an assist to propel the Bemidji State soccer team to its 16 victory of the season. The Beavers' 4-0 win over Minnesota State University Moorhead clinched at least a share of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference regular-season title for the first time in program history.

The Beavers knew they needed a win to give themselves a chance to earn the regular-season crown and they jumped out to an early lead thanks to Norton. The senior tipped a pass from Allyson Smith past the Dragon goalkeeper for her 17th goal of the season in the 13th minute to put the BSU ahead and it would not look back.

Smith added a goal of her own, her first since sustaining an injury Sept. 30, in the 33rd minute with help from Norton and Sarah Wendt. The goal gave BSU a two-goal lead as the first half came to an end.

The Beavers would get two goals in the first eight minutes of the second half to build their lead to 4-0. The first came off the foot of Erin Becker to Norton who was in front to redirect the shot past the goalkeeper and into the back of the net. Her 18th goal of the season not only extended a career-high for the senior, BSU’s all-time leading scorer also set a new single-season goal scoring record, surpassing Katie Meinhardt (2003-06) in the process.

Smith found the back of the net three minutes later for her third multi-goal match of the season. She corralled the ball in front and shot through a scrum to score. Megan Dahl and Becker were credited with assist son the play.

Goalkeeper Anna Fobbe started in goal and played 56:39, combining forces with Emma Reidi for the Beavers’ 11th shutout of the season. Fobbe stopped both Dragon shots on goal en route to the victory. She moves to 16-0-1 on the season.

The Beavers, now 16-0-1 overall and 13-0-1 in NSIC play, will travel to Aberdeen, S.D. Sunday to meet Northern State University at 1p.m. in the 2018 regular-season finale.

Nestled in Northern Minnesota’s wooded region and located on the shore of Lake Bemidji, Bemidji State University sponsors 15 varsity athletic programs with NCAA Division I men’s and women’s hockey membership in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, while its 13 NCAA Division II programs hold membership in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
