No. 18 Bemidji State prepares to open 2019 season with Winona State

BEMIDJI, Minn. -- The Bemidji State University soccer team officially gets its 2019 season underway Thursday with a 7 p.m. non-conference match versus long-time rival, Winona State University (0-0-0). The home contest is set for Chet Anderson Stadium.

BSU is coming off a 2018 Bemidji State completed the 2018 campaign with an overall record of 18-1-2 and finished the regular season as one of five teams in the country with an unbeaten record at 17-0-2. BSU earned its first-ever NSIC regular-season title going 14-0-1 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play. For the second consecutive season, the Beavers made an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

The Beavers open the 2019 campaign holding down the No. 18 spot in the preseason United Soccer Coaches national poll.

Since 2008, BSU is 9-2-0 in season openers and is 5-0-0 in season-openers at home during that span.

Dating back 26 matches to Oct. 2, 2016, the Beavers 22-1-3 (.904) at home and since moving their home to the turf at Chet Anderson Stadium for the 2013 season, BSU is 44-10-3 (.798).

The non-conference matchup marks just the second time the Beavers and Warriors have met outside league play. The last time, came Nov. 6, 2004. WSU defeated BSU, 2-0, in the first round of the NSIC Tournament.

Jim Stone, the 2018 NSIC Coach of the Year, will returns 18 players for the 2019 season, along with the addition of nine newcomers. The roster includes four players who earned All-NSIC honors last fall, eight of BSU’s top 10 scorers and one goalkeeper. Highlighting the Beavers’ 2019 roster is the NSIC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, Tia Neuharth (21 GP, 1,857 min, 2 G, 2 A, 6 pts, 2 GWG).
