BEMIDJI, Minn. (Chet Anderson Stadium ) -- Melanie Peltier and Alanna Mattson each scored and Alyssa Stumbaugh and Emma Riedi combined for five saves to lead the Bemidji State University soccer team to a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory over Upper Iowa University Friday.
The Beavers found themselves down early, but worked their way back with hard work, teamwork and a serious exhibition of skills.
In the 14th minute, the Peacocks found the back of the net Facienne Graham tucked the ball inside the left post and past BSU's starting goalkeeper, Alyssa Stumbaugh.
Just over 13 minutes later, in the 27th minute of play, Alanna Mattson scored her first goal of the year. The junior forward was in the right place at the right time. following a hard shot on goal by teammate Sara Wendt bounced off the goalkeeper, Mattson tapped the ball across the goal line.
Tied 1-1 after 45 minutes of play, Bemidji State again lit the scoreboard this time off the foot of senior midfielder Melanie Peltier. The Sioux Falls, S.D. native has driven the Beavers' attack all season. Her second goal of the season was skillfully placed just out of reach of the UIU goalie and under the crossbar from distance.
BSU finished the match with a 10-6 edge in shots and a 9-6 advantage in shots on goal.
The Beavers improved to 3-2-1 overall and 2-0-1 in NSIC play.
BSU will be back at home at 1 pm. Sunday when they host Winona State University.
