Mattson's overtime goal lifts BSU over Augustana, 2-1

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Chet Anderson Stadium) -- Alanna Mattson tapped a pass from Kennedy Michel past a charging Augustana goalkeeper to complete a Bemidji State come-from-behind victory Sunday, 2-1, in overtime.

The goal capped a two-goal, second-half rally to give BSU its first victory over the Vikings since Sept. 23, 2012 (0-5-3) and extends the Beavers' regular-season home winning streak to 28 matches (26-0-2), dating back to Oct. 7, 2016.

The Beavers and Vikings played a scoreless first half, but when a defender and BSU's goalkeeper got tangled up on the end line, Augustana was able to take a 1-0 lead in the 64th minute of play.

Augie then settled back and the Beavers changed formations to press. The changed earned Bemidji State a corner kick in the 82nd minute and Megan Majewski connected with Sara Wendt to tie the match. The header stood as Wendt's team-leading eighth goal of the season.

The teams played out the final eight minutes of regulation and opened the 10-minute overtime period locked 1-1.

After drawing with the Vikings in three of the last four meetings between the teams, the Beavers pulled out a victory this time when Wendt played the ball back to Michel just inside midfield. The rookie split a pair of defenders to find the foot of Mattson who slid a shot past the Viking goalkeeper and inside the left post for her fourth goal of the season.

BSU's Emma Riedi got credit for the win stopping six of the seven shots she faced in 98:03 of play.

Bemidji State, 10-4-1 overall and 9-2-1 in NSIC pay is back on the road Friday when it travels to Moorhead, Minn. for a conference matinee (3 p.m.) with Minnesota State University Moorhead. Sunday the team will host Northern State University at 1 p.m. for the team's 2019 regular-season finale.
