BSU soccer opens 2021 season at North Dakota

BEMIDJI, Minn. -- The Bemidji State University soccer team officially lifts the lid on its 2021 season Friday as it travels to Grand Forks, N.D. for a non-conference match at NCAA Division I foe University of North Dakota.  The match is set for a 3 p.m. opening kick from Bronson Field.

The BSU-UND matchup reignites a rivalry that dates back to 1999 but has seen the regional foes go head-to-head just two times since 2010.  The Fighting Hawks owns a 7-3-0 edge in the all-time series, however, the Beavers head into the meeting having won the last three contest between the teams, which includes a 1-0 victory over North Dakota Sept. 9, 2018.

The Beavers, who will play just their first official game since Nov. 13, 2019 and is coming off a 2-0 exhibition win over University of St. Catherine, meets a Fighting Hawk squad that already had two games in this season (1-1-0) and went 5-9-0 last season. UND opened the season with a 6-0 exhibition victory over Jamestown College August 14 before a 1-0 loss to University of Idaho August 22 and a 7-0 win at Southern University in Baton Rouge, La.

In addition to riding a three-match winning streak versus North Dakota, BSU has won each of its season-opening matches dating back to 2014 (6-0-0) and has earned victories in five straight regular-season contests.

Bemidji State, which finished its COVID-shortened 2020 campaign with a perfect 3-0 record, is under the direction of Head Coach Jim Stone, who is in his 20th season. He returns a talented roster of 20, which includes NSIC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and All-NSIC selection Megan Dahl and 2019 all-conference pick Sara Wendt, while 2018 all-region selection Smith returns to the lineup after sitting out in 2019.
