Becker and Wendt propel Bemidji State Soccer to 2-1 win at Concordia-St. Paul

ST. PAUL, Minn. (SeaFoam Stadium) – The Bemidji State University soccer team got goals from Erin Becker and Sara Wendt, while Georgiana Harber turned aside five of the six shots on goal she faced Sunday to extend the Beavers unbeaten streak to nine matches and their record to 6-0-1 overall and 3-0-1 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference competition.

The Beavers earned the first lead of the game with just over 10 minutes to play in the first half.  Locked in a scoreless draw, BSU’s Lexi Larson forced a turnover. Passes from Megan French and Maria Stocke put the ball back on Larson’s foot inside the box. When the junior attempted to split a pair of CSP defenders to take a shot, she was fouled. The play generated a penalty kick for the Beavers. Becker stepped up and neatly tucked the goal inside the right post.

Bemidji State took a 1-0 lead into halftime and extended it into the 61st minute of play. Anna Breffle then picked up the ball on the end line and passed to went in front of the CSP goal. BSU’s leading goal scorer turned and beat the Golden Bears’ goaltender to the near side for her ninth goal of the year. Wendt’s goal would stand as her fifth game-winning goal of the year.

CSP cut the BSU lead in half in the 81st minute. Abby Kloiber got the Golden Bears on the board and broke up Harber’s shutout streak at 170 minutes, but it was not enough as the Beavers held on for their six victory of 2021.

Harber improved to 2-0-0 on the season. She has now stopped six of the seven shots she has faced this season.

Bemidji State (6-0-1; 3-0-1 NSIC) continues NSIC play next weekend as it welcomes Augustana University and Wayne State College to The Chet. The Beavers host the Vikings at 7 p.m. Friday before welcoming the Wildcats at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Nestled in Northern Minnesota’s wooded region and located on the shore of Lake Bemidji, Bemidji State University sponsors 15 varsity athletic programs with NCAA Division I men’s and women’s hockey membership in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association and Western Collegiate Hockey Association, respectively, while its 13 NCAA Division II programs hold membership in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
