Schilling nets a goal and two assists to lead BSU past Upper Iowa, 4-2

FAYETTE, Iowa (Pattison Field) – The Bemidji State University soccer team picked up its 11th victory of the season and extended its unbeaten streak to 16 matches with a 4-2 victory Sunday at Upper Iowa University.

Freshman Mason Schilling collected a goal and two assists to lead the BSU scoring attack, while Sara Went posted two goals and Allyson Smith collected a goal and an assist.

It took the Beavers just 16 minutes to gain its first lead in the match and BSU would not look back. Schilling scored the second goal of her freshman season. Smith and Emma Huelsnitz set up the scoring play for the Venice, Fla. native who took a pass across the top of the 18-yard box for a tap in to a virtually open net.

The Beavers opened the second half with a 1-0 lead, but then Wendt and Schilling went to work. In the 49th minute of the match Schilling received a pass from Megan Carlson and lofted a pass to the far post. Wendt jumped and headed in her team-leading 13th goal of the season. Less than six minutes later (55th), Wendt sent a pass across the box, Schilling chased it down, turned and again dished a pass to the front of the net. Wendt redirected the ball with her head for her 14th goal of 2021.

In the 77th minute the Peacocks got on the board.  Forcing their fifth corner of the game, the ball bounced off the far post and rattled around the box before Katie Samuels collected it and found the back of the net.

BSU added to its lead in the 86th minute. After Smith forced a UIU turnover, she dumped the ball off for Erin Becker, the senior from Andover, Minn. completed the give-and-go, slipping a through pass back to Smith for her fourth goal of the season.

With less than three minutes to play, UIU was able to cut the BSU lead in half. Samuel was credited with her second goal of the match.

Alyssa Stumbaugh earned her eighth victory of the season (8-0-1) holding the Peacocks to two goals, while making five stops in 90 between the posts. She improved to 8-0-1.
