Bemidji State Picks up first win of 2007 campaign

BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State University tennis team claimed its first victory of the year Tuesday, defeating the Golden Eagles of the University of Minnesota Crookston by a score of 8-1 at the Gillett Recreation and Fitness Center in Bemidji, Minn.

The Beavers started out the match quickly in doubles play where they were able to sweep the Golden Eagles at all three positions. The sophmore team of Amy Erickson (Roseau, Minn.) and Julie Kaspner (Pierz, Minn.) were victorious over the Golden Eagle pair of Vanessa Houle and Jillian Morin by a score of 8-2 at the No. 2 doubles spot. The No. 3 doubles pair of Erin Mapes (Monticello, Minn.) and Cheyanne Maki (Watford City, N.D.) came away with an easy 8-0 victory over Kim Anderson and Holly Robinson.

The Beavers did not let up in singles play as No. 1 singles player Kali Welu (Pequot Lakes, Minn.) picked up her second victory of the year beating Jacqueline Noah 6-1, 6-3. Kristen Lexcen (Coon Rapids, Minn.) also picked up her first victory of the 2007 season at the No. 2 spot, playing in a marathon match against the Golden Eagles Vanessa Houle, prevailing 6-4, 7-5. Kaspner and Maki breezed to 6-0, 6-0 victories at the No. 3 and 6 spots over Susan Turner and Holly Robinson respectively.

Of the two matches the teams have scheduled for this season, this match will not be counted toward the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference record. With the victory the Beavers record moves to 1-9 (0-2; NSIC) on the season. The Beavers are next scheduled to hit the road to face the Southwest Minnesota State University Mustangs on Friday April 6th at 6:00 p.m. at Gold’s Gym in St. Cloud, Minn. The match was previously scheduled for Saturday in Marshall, Minn. but because of weather was rescheduled.
