Beavers sweep Morningside and Briar Cliff

BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State University womens tennis team came away with an impressive sweep Sunday as it defeated Morningside College and Briar Cliff University by the score of 7-2 at the Four Seasons Health Club in Sioux City, Iowa.

The victories left the Beavers going 2-1 on the weekend with the only loss being against the University of South Dakota Saturday evening.

Coach Scott Sorenson changed the lineup this weekend and reaped the benefits as the newly matched team of Kali Welu (Jr., Pequot Lakes, Minn.) and Julie Kapsner (Jr., Pierz, Minn.) went 2-0 on the day at No. 2 doubles defeating Morningside’s Kate Nelson and Erin Koskovich as well as Briar Cliff’s team of Kayla Boyd and Harper Phillips both by a score of 8-2.

The No. 3 doubles team of Farrah Seinke (Fr., Crosby, Minn.) and Cheyanne Maki (So., Watford City, N.D.) went 2-0 on the day winning there match against Morningside’s Marisa Graham and Lynn Leonard 8-3 and breezed past Briar Cliff’s Julia robinson and Kayla Phillips 8-0.

Steinke also went 2-0 at No. 5 singles and moves her consecutive singles match victory streak to five as she didn’t have trouble with the Mustangs Marisa Graham defeating her 6-0, 6-1. She then concluded her day with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over the Chargers Julia Robinson. Steinke is a remarkable 9-1 in her last ten singles and doubles matches combined.

Bemidji State started its first match of the day gaining a 2-1 lead in doubles and were able to keep the Mustangs at bay as they went 5-1 in singles action sparked by senior Kristen Lexcen (Sr., Andover, Minn.) who defeated ronda Kachena 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. The victory would be the second of the season for the Beavers and lowered Morningside’s record to 0-1.

The second match of the day proved to be quite similar to the first as Bemidji State gained a 2-1 lead in doubles and again went 5-1 in singles to come away with the match 7-2. Shelia Hoberg (So., Bismarck, N.D.) contributed with a victory at No. 4 singles defeating the Chargers Haper Phillips 6-1, 6-0.

The Beavers record now stands at 3-5 (0-1; NSIC) and surpasses last years win total of two. Briar Cliff drops to 0-2 on the season.

Bemidji State returns to action March 15 with a pair of maches in St. Cloud, Minn. as it will face off against Luther at 2:00 p.m. and wrap up with a match against St. Cloud State at 5:30 p.m. The next day the Beavers continue their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference season as they play in St. Cloud, Minn. against the Winona State University Warriors.
