BSU drops two matches in opening weekend of play

DULUTH, Minn. -- The Bemidji State University tennis team lifted the lid on the 2009 season Friday, with a pair of dual matches in Duluth, Minn. The Beavers fell to University of Minnesota Duluth 6-3 and lost a nail biter to Minnesota State University Mankato, 5-4.

The Beavers opened play versus Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference foe Minnesota Duluth at UMD's at Ward Wells Fieldhouse. The Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead out of the doubles matches, and would go on to claim the match by a 6-3 margin but not before the Beavers worked for a split in singles play.

Freshman Nicole Christiansen (Bemidji, Minn.) got BSU started battling back from a 6-1 loss in the first set to claim a point at No. 2 singles by defeating UMD's Steph Keller in a third-set tie-breaker (1-6, 6-4, 1-0.

Bemidji State also earned wins at the No. 4 and No. 6 singles positions, respectively. Kelli Christiansen (Fr., Bemidji, Minn.) won her match over Kelly Rosengren in straight sets (6-2, 6-1), while Amy Erickson (Sr., Roseau, Minn.) need to win a tie breaker, but took a point at No. 6 singles over Jessie Stensrud.

The Beavers and Minnesota State traveled across town to the College of St. Scholastica's Health and Wellness Center for the night cap match.

The Beavers held a 4-3 lead over the Mavericks heading into the final two matches but faltered down the stretch and dropped the match 5-4.

At. No. 2 doubles, BSU's team of Farrah Steinke (So., Crosby, Minn.) and Miranda Milless (Fr., Motley, Minn.) earned a 8-5 victory over MSU's Paige Burke and Cassandra Anderson (8-5), while Kelli Christiansen and Cheyanne Maki (Jr., Watford City, N.D.) posted a 8-5 win over Heather Jensen and Carly Hiedeman at the No. 3 spot to take a 2-1 lead out of doubles play.

Nicole Christiansen again led the way for the Beavers in singles play earning a win over Sarah Madigan in a tie-breaker (3-6. 6-3, 1-0).

Erickson posted her second singles win of the season defeating Hiedeman 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 6 spot.

The Beavers (0-2; 0-2 NSIC) have the next two weeks off before jumping back in to competition with a four-match tournament hosted by the University of North Dakota Feb. 27-28. The Beavers are set to take on the hosting Fighting Sioux, University of Minnesota, Crookston, Northern State University and University of Mary (N.D.) at the event.
