BSU tennis drops a pair of NSIC matches in Winona

WINONA, Minn. (Winona Tennis Center) -- Bemidji State University tennis team fell to a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) opponents Saturday.  The Beavers were swept, 9-0, by Winona State University early before dropping a 6-3 decision to Upper Iowa University late at the Winona Tennis Center.

The Warriors opened up a 3-0 lead over BSU, blanking the Beavers’ top two doubles pairs, 8-0, and gaining an 8-5 victory over Cheyanne Maki (Sr., Watford City, N.D.) and Miranda Milless (So., Motley, Minn.) at the No. 3 doubles position.

WSU continued its dominance as singles action got underway, coasting to a 9-0 win.  The Warriors earned straight-set victories at all six singles slots, with only Britney Greenwaldt (So., Morris, Minn.) managing to win as many as two games in a set, dropping her match to Mary Hesterman 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

In the second match of the day, the Beavers held UIU within striking distance during doubles play.  With the teams of Farrah Steinke (Sr., Crosby, Minn.) and Lindsey Luberda (Sr., Champlin, Minn.) falling 8-3 at No. 1 and Kelli Christiansen (So., Bemidji, Minn.) and Kara Johnson (Jr., Andover, Minn.) dropping their No. 2 doubles match, 8-4, Bemidji State’s third doubles pair rallied for an 8-3 victory to enter singles action tailing the Peacocks by a single team point, 2-1.

Upper Iowa earned straight-set wins at the top three singles positions to take a 5-1 lead before the Beavers would make a move.

Christiansen’s No. 4 singles opponent retired trailing 6-2 to close the UIU lead to 5-2 and then Johnson posted her second singles win of 2010 6-4, 6-0 victory over Jennah Smith in the No. 5 spot to come within two points (5-3), but the Beavers string of luck would end there.  The Peacocks’ Nicole Henry closed out the 6-3 victory with a 6-2, 6-0 decision over Milless in the final singles match.

The Beavers, now 3-12 overall and 2-8 in NSIC action wraps up the 2010 regular-season with a non-conference match versus St. Mary’s (Minn.) tomorrow.  The match is set for a 10 a.m. start at the Winona Tennis Center.
