FARGO, N.D. - The Bemidji State University tennis team picked up their second win of the season on Friday night in a 8-1 decision over University of Mary. The Beavers improve to 2-9 with Friday's win. The Marauders fall to 0-6 with the loss. Friday's match was played at a neutral site in Fargo, N.D.
BSU took control of the match early by sweeping all three doubles matches to take a quick 3-0 lead over their foes from Bismarck, N.D. The three doubles wins give Bemidji State their first sweep of the doubles portion of a match this season in Beth Campus' first year with the program.
At the No. 1 slot, Kara Johnson (Sr., Anoka, Minn.) and Kelli Christiansen (Jr., Bemidji, Minn.) picked up their first win of the season 8-2 to improve their overall mark to 1-10 during the 2011 campaign.
At No. 2 doubles, Meg Hafdahl (So., Virginia, Minn.) and Miranda Milless (Jr., Motley, Minn.) came away with an 8-3 victory to improve their record to 3-5 on the season.
In No. 3 doubles action, Katherine Wolak (Jr., Geneseo, Ill.) and Britney Greenwaldt (Jr., Morris, Minn.) upended their foes from U-Mary 8-0 to put their overall season mark at 5-4.
The BSU netters were just as successful on their own as they were in doubles as U-Mary picked up only one point from the six singles matches on Friday night.
At No. 1 singles, Johnson was the lone BSU netter to fall 6-2, 1-6, 7-10, as she was unable to come away with her first singles win of the season. She heads into next week with a 0-11 clip at the No. 1 slot.
At the No. 2 spot, Greenwaldt picked up a 6-1, 6-2 victory to improve to 3-8 on the season in singles play.
At No. 3 singles, Christiansen picked up her second singles victory of the week with a 6-4, 6-3 decision. Christiansen is now 4-7 on the season.
At the No. 4 slot, Milless defeated her U-Mary opponent 6-0, 6-7, 12-10 to pick up her first singles victory of the season and improve to 1-9 overall on the year.
At No. 5 singles, Hafdahl won 6-3, 6-0 and is now 5-5 at the No. 5 slot this season.
Wolak came away with a 6-1, 6-2 decision to give BSU the victory at No. 6 singles. Wolak is tied with Hafdahl for the most singles wins this season with a 5-5 overall mark.
BSU and U-Mary did not meet last season but the Beavers defeated the Marauders 9-0 in their meeting Feb. 28, 2009 in Grand Forks, N.D.
Bemidji State's other victory this season came over NSIC foe University of Minnesota Duluth Feb. 20 in Bemidji, Minn. in what was considered a nonconference match thus Friday's victory was their first official win in conference play.
The Beavers will next take to the court April 2 against University of Minnesota, Crookston in Grand Forks, N.D. Minnesota, Crookston joins U-Mary as one of two teams that have yet to pick up a conference victory this season in the NSIC.
