BEMIDJI, Minn. (Gillett Recration-Fitness Center) The Bemidji State University tennis team marked its return home with a pair of victories Saturday a the Gillett Recration-Fitness Center. The Beavers defeated University of Minnesota-Morris, 6-3, before downing University of Minnesota Crookston, 7-2.
In its first home action since Feb. 15, The Beavers opened the day of competition with a nonconference win over the Cougars. After taking all three doubles matches, the Beavers powered through to earn wins in three of six singles contests to take the match 6-3.
In the second mach of the day, Bemidji State dropped its No. 1 doubles match, but bounced back to win at No. 2 and No. 3 and take a 2-1 lead into singles play. The Beavers garnered straight-set victories at No. 1, No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions and Mikela Kowatch battled back at No. 3 singles to earn a 10-5 victory in a tie break to win her match 6-1, 4-6, 10-5. BSU dropped the No. 4 singles match 7-5, 6-2, but cruised to a 7-2 NSIC win.
The Beavers improved to 6-5 on the season and 3-4 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play.
BSU returns to action April 5 when it hosts University of Mary in league play. The match is set to get underway at noon at the Gillett Recreation-Fitness Center.
