DULUTH, Minn. -- The Bemidji State University tennis team split a weekend of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference competition in Duluth, Minn. The Beavers suffered a 4-3 loss at University of Minnesota Duluth before picking up a 6-1 decision versus St. Cloud State University.
The Beavers move to 4-5 overall and 4-5 in NSIC competition.
Friday, BSU was narrowly edged by Minnesota Duluth. BSU's top doubles pair of Sophie Groen and Shaelyn Johnson earned a 6-4 victory in their match, but the Bulldogs took the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches to earn a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
The Beavers dominated play at the top of the singles competition. Groen posted a 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 1 singles slot. Johnson followed that with a tie-break win at No. 2 singles 6-0, 2-6 (7-5). In addition, Hannah Peterson picked up a 6-3, 6-7, 6-2 victory in the fourth singles match, but that was where the team point scoring ended as UMD earned wins in the final two singles matches and took the contests, 4-3.
Saturday BSU improved its record to 4-5 with a dominating performance versus SCSU.
Again the Beavers got a No. 1 doubles win from Groen and Johnson (6-3). Claudie Billand and Isabele Nelson narrowly lost in the No. 2 slot (6-2), but Hannah Peterson and Laney Rutkowski posted a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles to claim the doubles point for BSU.
Bemidji State nearly made a clean sweep of singles matches, getting wins from Groen at No. 1 (6-2, 6-2), Johnsons posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 and Billand battled back from a 7-5 loss in the first set to take the second set 6-4 and earn a 10-1 win in the tie break. In addition, Rutkowski posted a win at No. 5 by default and Nelson rounded out the match with a straight-sets win in her sixth singles match (6-0, 6-4).
The Beavers next travel to Grand Forks, N.D. April 9 to wrap up the NSIC regular season with a pair of neutral-site league matches. BSU will first take onAugustana University at 8 a.m. before a 10:30 a.m. match versus University of Sioux Falls.
