Men and Women Compete At Cobber Duals; Facility Record Set By Leuer, Hoheisel Provisionally Qualifies

Moorhead, Minn. - At the Cobber Duals on Saturday, the Bemidji State University men’s squad had six individual top-five finishers, while the women had five.

Senior Steve Leuer (Maple Grove, Minn.) placed first with a mark of 2:29.95 in the 1,000M. This time was also good enough for the Olson Forum facility record. Sophomore Steve Schreiber (Chisago Lakes, Minn.) led all jumpers in the high jump with a mark of 6-2 3/4. Closely behind was Travis Schwarz with a jump of 5-10 3/4, placing third. Senior Jason Jacoby (Clements, Minn.) took third (9:36.84) in the 3,000M run. In the triple jump, sophomore Mark Nordell (Apple Valley, Minn.) placed fifth with a jump of 42-0 1/2. Freshman Adam Wilson (Forest Lake, Minn.) took fifth place in the shot put (44-9 3/4) as well.

For the women, junior Melanie Hoheisel (Pengilly, Minn.) led the way in the 55M hurdles with a mark of 8.43. Melanie bettered the provisional qualification mark in the event, making her eligible for the NCAA Championships. She is currently ranked 10th in Division II. She also placed fourth in the 55M dash with a time of 7.48. In the 800M event, freshman Dawn Holman (Big Falls, Minn.) placed third with a time of 3:14.56. Sophomore Martha Miltich (Cohasset, Minn.) ran a time of 3:14.56 in the 1,000M. In the 3,000M, freshman Casey Schmidt, placed fourth with a mark of 11:49.23.

As a team, the men took fourth out of the eight teams with a 4-3 record while the women finished sixth with a 2-5 mark.

Two BSU women competed at the North Dakota State Pentathlon held on Sunday. Hoheisel finished eighth with 2,822 points, which is a school record. April Clairmont had the old one of 2,523 points back in 1998. Also, sophomore Megan Hamilton(Byron, Minn.) took 12th with 2,264 points in the event.

The next scheduled event is the Concordia Pentathlon on Friday, Feb. 7th.

BSU Head Coach Craig Hougen
Bemidji State University Track & Field is under the direction of head coach Craig Hougen. Hougen entered the coaching ranks as the head track and field coach at Sheridan High School in Wyoming in 1979 and accepted additional duties as assistant coach with the football and basketball programs during his 10-year stay with Sheridan H.S. athletics. The 1977 graduate of Valley City State received his M.A. from BSU in 1979 as he was a graduate assistant for the track and field squads.

Craig, wife Ann, son Michael (18) and daughters Rebecca (15) and Alison (12) reside in Bemidji.
