Both Squads Compete At Super 8 Open; New School Records by Hoheseil and Leuer

Bemidji, Minn. - This afternoon at Bemidji State University, the BSU men’s squad had nine top-five finishers, while the women had seven at the Super 8 Open. Two school records were set for the Beavers. In the 55M hurdles, junior Melanie Hoheisel (Pengilly, Minn.) led the way with a first-place finish (9.01). For the men in the 3,000M, senior Steve Leuer (Maple Grove, Minn.) placed first with a mark of 8:44.99. Jim Bydlon held the record in 1979 with a time of 8:44.99.

For the men, Kenny Miller placed first (2:31.72) in the 1000 meter run. Shortly behind was junior Corey White (Winthrop, Minn.) who placed second with a mark of 2:32.23. Senior Jason Jacoby (Clements, Minn.) took first (16:44.33) as freshman Kevin Heltemes (Wadena, Minn.) took second (16:57.63) in the 5000 meter run.

For the women, Hoheisel added to her school record placing second in the 55 meter dash (8.09) Also, senior Josie Muzquiz (Detroit Lakes, Minn.) took third (3:33.74) in the 1,000 meter run. Sophomore Martha Miltich (Cohasset, Minn.) placed first in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 11:16.41.

There were no team results recorded.

The BSU track and field teams would like to recognize Super 8 Motel for it’s continued support of this event.

BSU will be heading to Moorhead, Minn. Feb. 1st to compete in the Concordia Open.

BSU Head Coach Craig Hougen
Bemidji State University Track & Field is under the direction of head coach Craig Hougen. Hougen entered the coaching ranks as the head track and field coach at Sheridan High School in Wyoming in 1979 and accepted additional duties as assistant coach with the football and basketball programs during his 10-year stay with Sheridan H.S. athletics. The 1977 graduate of Valley City State received his M.A. from BSU in 1979 as he was a graduate assistant for the track and field squads.
Craig, wife Ann, son Michael (18) and daughters Rebecca (15) and Alison (12) reside in Bemidji.
