Both Squads Compete At Northwest Open; Season-Opening Event Hosted by Minnesota

Minneapolis, Minn. - This afternoon at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse, the men’s squad had three top-five finishers, including the top place in the distance medley relay, while the women had five at the Northwest Open.

For the men, freshman Tristan White (Portland, Ore.) had the top-finish as he was third in the 200 meter developmental run with a mark of 23.58. The other top-five performers: junior Mitch Cooper (Davenport, Iowa), who was fourth in the long jump with a distance of 20-11 3/4, and freshman Adam Wilson (Forest Lake, Minn.), who was fourth in the shot put with a distance of 45-2 1/2. The BSU distance medley relay squad won the event with a time of 10:41.26.

For the women, junior Melanie Hoheisel (Pengilly, Minn.) led the way with a second-place finish in the 60 meter hurdles (9.30) and a fourth-place finish in the 60 meter dash (8.32). Also, senior Josie Muzquiz (Detroit Lakes, Minn.) took third (6:03.99) with freshman Katie Dippel (Davenport, Iowa) right behind in fourth (6:47.51) in the 800 meter run. Sophomore Martha Miltich (Cohasset, Minn.) placed third in the 3000 meter run (11:07.65) to round out the top-five finishers.

There were not team results recorded.

This event featured Division I institution Minnesota and had Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference school MSU Moorhead and North Central Conference teams in St. Cloud State and MSU-Mankato in attendance.

BSU will host its next two events on the season with the BSU Alumni event next Saturday and the Super 8 on Jan. 25. Both will take place at the Gillett Recreation Fitness Center.

BSU Head Coach Craig Hougen
Bemidji State University Track & Field is under the direction of head coach Craig Hougen. Hougen entered the coaching ranks as the head track and field coach at Sheridan High School in Wyoming in 1979 and accepted additional duties as assistant coach with the football and basketball programs during his 10-year stay with Sheridan H.S. athletics. The 1977 graduate of Valley City State received his M.A. from BSU in 1979 as he was a graduate assistant for the track and field squads.
Craig, wife Ann, son Michael (18) and daughters Rebecca (15) and Alison (12) reside in Bemidji.
