BEMIDJI , Minn. - After a busy weekend of competition in which freshman Ashley Spolarich (Maple Lake, Minn.) tied a Bemidji State school record in the high jump (5-8 1/2) and the throwing trio of junior Adam Wilson (Forest Lake, Minn), sophomore R.J. Gross (Jamestown, N.D.), and sophomore Justin Cox (Menahga, Minn.) collected six top-10 finishes, BSU’s track and field team will head to Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, on Saturday to compete in the Jim Duncan Invite.

The Jim Duncan Invite will be the third team competition for BSU this season.

In the first competition of the season in Madison, S.D., Bemidji State had 47 top-five individual finishes competing against Dakota State University, Mount Marty College, Martin Luther College and South Dakota State University.

At the second competition in St. Paul, Minn., BSU would not let a larger number of participants stand in their way as junior Christa Pribula claimed first place in the 3000-meter steeple chase after running for 12:21.69, edging out Minnesota’s Jenna Traska by 1.69 seconds. Sophomore Rodney Williams (Inglewood, Calif.) would add the second, and last, first place finish for BSU when he grabbed first place in the long jump with his leap of 21-10 1/4.

After Friday’s competition, five members of the BSU track and field team would head to Collegeville, Minn., to compete in the St. John’s Multi.

On the women’s side, sophomore Nicole Friend (International Falls, Minn.) claimed fifth place in the heptathlon with 4,065 points, finishing just 69 points ahead of Spolarich.

Senior Ben Mettling (Pine City, Minn.) had the highest finish on the men’s side, finishing fourth in the decathlon. Finishing behind Mettling was senior Rob Kucher (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) in fifth and freshman Joseph Bernau (Courtland, Minn.) in eighth.

In just two meets, the men’s throwers for Bemidji State have collected 22 top-10 finishes between the shot put, discus, hammer throw and javelin.
