BSU's Hougen finishes second in conference decathlon

BEMIDJI, Minn. - [results] Bemidji State University's Michael Hougen grabbed and second place finish and eight team points for his team at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Decathlon held on Sunday and Monday in Aberdeen, S.D.

Michael was followed Tommy Crummy in fifth, Justin Smith in seventh and Joe Bernau in eighth. He collected his best individual event finishes in the 110-meter hurdles and the javelin throw, finishing both event in second place.

Crummy collected the highest individual event points total as he turned in a first place finish in the pole vault. Clearing 15-1, Crummy garnered 790 points and beat the rest of the field by over two feet.

In the women's heptathlon, Nicole Friend had the highest finish for Bemidji State, ending the competition in fifth place overall.

Friend grabbed a first place finish in the javelin throw (123-3) and two second place finishes in both the 800-meter run (2:23.98) and the 200-meter dash (26.74).

Also competing in the event was Rebecca Hougen. She finished in seventh place overall.

Heading into the NSIC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, the men have collected 16 team points and currently sit in second place. The women tallied six team points and sit in fouth place.

Bemidji State will next be in action on Saturday as they compete in the Ron Masanz Open in Moorhead, Minn.
