Crummy garners second place finish for BSU in NSIC Multi
Monday, February 13, 2006
ABERDEEN, S.D. - As the NSIC Multi came to a close, Bemidji State University's Tommy Crummy edged out Northern State University's Eric Schwan by five points to claim second place overall at the NSIC Multi held at the Barnett Center in Aberdeen, S.D.

The men broke into day two with the 55-meter hurdles. Michael Hougen had the best finish for Bemidji State in the event, finishing in second place with his time of 8.32. His second place finish earned him 768 points in the overall standings to move him from seventh place to fifth place. Hougen held his fifth place position after a fourth place finish in the pole vault with his height of 10-2.

Crummy, who began the day in fifth place overall, captured a sixth place finish in the 55-meter hurdles and dropped to seventh place in the overall standings. But, Crummy would not stay there for long as he grabbed one of BSU's two first place finish in the Multi, clearing the 15-1 mark in the pole vault to catapult him to second place in the overall standings. Crummy's height was 3-3 1/4 better than the second place finisher in the event and earned him 790 points towards his overall total.

For Bernau, his eighth place finish in the 55-meter hurdles (9.87) and his third place finish in the pole vault (11-1 3/4) left him in eighth place overall heading into the final event, the 1000-meter run.

In the final event of the heptathlon, Hougen crossed the finish line over five seconds ahead of the rest of the pack, finishing the race in 2:55.60. Bernau finished in 3:04.42 to claim second in the event while Crummy's time of 3:12.12 was good enough for a sixth place finish.

Overall, Crummy claimed second place finish in a record-setting fashion. Crummy's 4124 points in the heptathlon is a new Bemidji State school record.

Hougen had the next best overall finish for the Beavers as he finished in fourth place. Bernau finished the heptathlon in seventh place, collecting 3627 points

The full team for Bemidji State will next be in action as they host their final regular season competition on Friday. The Beaver Classic will be held in the Gillett Recreation Fitness Center and action is scheduled to get under way at 2:30 p.m.
