Devine wraps up Drake Relays with season-best throw
Saturday, April 28, 2007
DES MOINES, Iowa -- Bemidji State University track and field athletes continued to shine Saturday as they participated in the final day of the 2007 Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa. Just 24 hours after Joe Remitz (Jr., North Branch, Minn.) and Todd Zeidler (Sr., Plentywood, Mont.) posted season-best distances in their respective throwing events, Sheena Devine (Jr., Harris, Minn.) and Justin Cox (Sr., Menahga, Minn.) finished the day amongst many of the top collegiate throwers. Devine's 11th place toss of 48-00.75 in the shot put surpassed her previous season-best throw by 11 inches and extends her lead to almost five feet over the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference field. Just four inches shy of her own BSU outdoor shot put record, set at last year's NSIC Championships, her Drake Relays mark should move her up two places to seventh on the NCAA Division II outdoor performance list. Despite finishing in 11th place, Devine found herself in good company. She posted the top Division II distance of the day placing behind only Division I athletes from the likes of the University of Texas, the University of Missouri, the University of Kansas and the University of Minnesota. Cox placed fourth among non-Division I athletes in the discus with a distance of 159-04 to take 19th overall. He continues to hold down the 15th spot on the NCAA D-II performance list with a 2007 NSIC-best and BSU school-record distance of 161-09--13 feet further than his nearest competitor, BSU teammate Zac Preble (Fr., Coleraine, Minn.). The rest of the Bemidji State men's and women's track and field teams were also in action Saturday traveling to Jamestown, N.D. to compete in the Al Cassel Relays. No results for that were available at the time of this release.
