Buerkle and Newman garner Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week honors

BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University’s Kristi Buerkle (So., Stacy, Minn.) and Paul Newman (Sr., 1B, Durhamville, N.Y) have been selected as Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week for outstanding performances during the week of April 21-26.

Buerkle posted her fastest times of the season in the 200- and 400-meter dashes at the 55th Al Cassell Relays in Jamestown, N.D. Saturday. She broke the tape in a time of 56.26 in the 400-meters to not only post the NSIC's best time in the event in 2009, but also move her to 12th place on the NCAA Performance list. She also took second place in the 200-meters with a 25.49--good for fourth in the league this spring.

Newman , a senior first baseman on the BSU baseball team, hit .529 (9-17) in five games last week with three doubles, one home run, seven RBI, four runs scored and a .882 slugging percentage posting at least one hit in four of the five games in which he made an appeared. In a two-game set versus the University of Mary, he was 4-for-7 with six RBI and two runs scored with a double and a home run. In the four-game set with Concordia University, St. Paul he was 5-for-8 with two runs scored one RBI and two doubles in the final two games of the weekend series.

The Beavers will continue their 2009 outdoor season when they travel to St. Peter, Minn. May 1 to compete in in the Gustie Open. A contingent of the team will also make the trip to Moorhead, Minn. the following day (May 2) to take part in the Ron Masanz Open.

Newman and the Beaver baseball puts the wraps on their 2009 season with a four-game set at Montana State Billings May 2-3.
