BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University’s Kristi Buerkle (So., Stacy, Minn.) and Brent Vollbrecht (Sr.,
RHP, Morristown, Minn.) have been selected as Beaver Pride Athletes of
the Week for outstanding performances from April 12-19.
Buerkle captured three sprint event titles at the Bulldog Open in
Duluth, Minn. April 18. Buerkle’s times of 12.74 in the 100,
25.62 in the 200-meters and 56.91 in the 400-meter dash each
represented her best times of the 2009 outdoor season and rank her
among the NSIC top 10 in each event. Her 400-meter time was just .10
off NCAA provisional qualifying pace. Her trifecta of wins marked the
second consecutive week Buerkle has swept the sprints.
Vollbrecht
picked up the Beavers’ lone win last week as he pitched a
complete game gem versus Minnesota Duluth. The senior right-hander
scattered four Bulldog hits allowing two runs (one earned) with a walk
and a pair of strikeout as he helped the Beavers upend UMD 13-2 in game
1 of a four-game weekend series. Vollbrecht improved his record to 3-4
with the win and it was his team-leading second complete game of the
season.
The Bemidji State track and field
teams are back in action April 25 as they travel to Jamestown, N.D. to
compete in the Al Cassel Relays.
Vollbrecht and the Beaver baseball team hit the road for a nine-inning
contest at Jamestown College April 23 before returning to the BSU
Baseball Field for a four-game series with Northern Sun Intercollegiate
foe Concordia University-St. Paul April 25-26. Doubleheader action is
set to begin at noon each day.
