Bemidji State completes Day 1 of competition

BEMIDJI , Minn. --  It was a frenzy-like atmosphere this afternoon in the Gillett Recreation-Fitness Center on the campus of Bemidji State University. The NSIC Championship’s got underway earlier today. After the first day of competition the Bemidji State University men’s track and field team sits in seventh-place in the team standings.

Bemidji State freshman Marcus Dennis (Fr., Walker, Minn.) finished in fourth-place in the high jump. He leaped over a height of 6-05.50 and was able to garner five points to add to Bemidji State’s total team score. BSU distance runner Dominique Trom (So., Byron, Minn.) qualified to compete in the finals tomorrow afternoon crossing the tape in 4:53.01. Fellow distance runner Tyler Lange (So., Nicollet, Minn.) qualified for the finals in the 600-meter run with a finishing time of 1:25.00.

On the women’s side, sophomore sprinter Kristi Buerkle (So., Stacy, Minn.) finished the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.96. In the process, Buerkle qualified for the finals recording the top-time of the day. The sophomore also qualified for the 200-meter dash finals recording a time of 25.95.

Field events are set to begin at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning at the Gillett Recreation-Fitness Center. The weight throw will be the first event of the final day of the NSIC Championship’s. Competition heats up as the finals in the track events get underway at 1 p.m., starting with the mile run. The 4x400-meter relays will put a wrap on the 2009 indoor season, starting at 4 p.m. An award ceremony will take place on the infield at 4:45.
