Buerkle clocks school-record 400-meter time at Bison Open
FARGO, N.D. -- (Bison Sports Arena) Junior Kristi Buerkle (Stacy, Minn.) continued her assault on the Bemidji State University indoor sprint record book with first-place performance in the 400-meter dash at the Bison Open in Fargo, N.D.

Saturday, Buerkle broke her own indoor 400-meter dash record with a time of 56.32 to account for the Beavers’ only first-place finish at the open. She time shaved .10 off a standard set just a week ago, posted the second-fastest time in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) this season, and moved to fifth place among NCAA championship qualifiers.

In addition, Buerkle finished second in the 200-meter dash despite falling off her best time of the season.  She crossed the finish line in a time of 25.56.

In the women’s field events, Missy Graber (Sr., Bemidji, Minn.) also posted a top eight finish for BSU.  The senior earned seventh place in the weight throw with a toss of 46-00.75.

On the men’s side of the open, Brian Leonhardt (So., Blaine, Minn.) scored a third-place finish in the shot put to lead the Beaver men.  He stretched the tape nearly three and a half feet beyond his previous personal-best to 51-05.00.

Eric Schauer (So., Langdon, N.D.) recorded the Beavers’ top 800-meter time of 2010, taking sixth place with a time of 2:01.85.

Raphael Gelo (Fr., Kabetogama, Minn.) finished seventh in the pole vault clearing 14-03.25, as he continued to be among the top vaulters week after week.

Bemidji State’s multi-event athletes will travel to Aberdeen, S.D. to participate in the NSIC Multis beginning Sunday and continuing into Monday.  Senior Zac Preble (Coleraine, Minn.), who has been ranked among NCAA Division II’s top heptathletes all season, looks to defend his NSIC multi-event title in the first leg of the 2010 NSIC Indoor Track and Field Championships.
