Beavers capture seven event titles at BSU Twilight
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- (Gillett Fitness-Recreation Center) The Bemidji State University men’s and women’s track and field teams posted seven event titles Thursday as the Beavers hosted the 2010 BSU Twilight at the Gillett Recreation-Fitness Center.  The BSU women had three different student-athletes post top finishes, while three Beaver men took first place in addition to a first place finish by their 4x400-meter relay team.

Junior sprinter Kristi Buerkle (Stacy, Minn.) led the BSU women claiming first place with a school-record 25.26 in the 200-meter dash, while she clocked a season-best 7.36 in the 55-meter dash to finish second.

Buerkle’s 200-meter record shaved .18 from her own standard in the event, set Feb. 6, 2010 at the Ted Nelson Classic in Mankato, Minn.  It marks the third time this indoor season she has broken the school’s 200-meter record and moves the junior to 15th on the NCAA Division II performance list.

Shelly Saksa (Jr., Dassel, Minn.) and Missy Graber (Sr., Bemidji, Minn.) also were top finishers in their respective events.  Saksa was first to cross the finish line in the mile run (5:44.18), while Graber took first in the weight throw with a new season-long 48-00.75, which moved her to 12th on the 2010 NSIC performance list.

Michelle Ohman
(Fr., Prior Lake, Minn.) also fared well at the meet.  The freshman finished second in the 600-meter run.  Her time of 1:42.58 was a her personal-best in the event.

The Bemidji State men were headlined by their sprinters.  Mark Buerkle (Fr., Stacy, Minn.) netted first place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.77.  Eric Schauer (So., Langdon, N.D.) turned in the Beavers’ fastest 600-meter dash time of 2010, finishing first in 1:26.59.  In addition, the BSU 4x400-meter relay team finished nearly 12 ahead of its closest competitor, posting a first-place time of 3:32.12.

In the field events, Rapheal Gelo (Fr., Kabetogama, Minn.) continued to raise the bar in the pole vault.  The newcomer cleared 15-00.00 to claim first place and a new personal-best. In addition, Kyle Christianson (Sr., Park Rapids, Minn.) took second place in the weight throw, stretching the tape to a 2010-best 51-08.25.  His throw also moved him to eighth place on the 2010 NSIC Indoor performance list just a week out from the 2010 championships.

Although Brian Leonhardt (So., Blaine, Minn.) was edged in the shot put, he finished second and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships with a distance of 53-00.00.  His best mark moved him to second place on the NSIC performance list and stands as the 22nd-best throw in the nation this season.

Bemidji State men’s and women’s track and field teams return to action Feb. 26-27 when they travel to Mankato, Minn. and the Myers Fieldhouse for the 2010 NSIC Indoor Track and Field Championships.
