Buerkle sets school 600-meter record at CSS Mini Meet
DULUTH, Minn. -- (Burns Wellness Fieldhouse) The Bemidji State University men’s and women’s track and field teams got a jump on the 2011 season Saturday as they traveled to Duluth, Minn. to participate in the College of St. Scholastica’s Mini Meet.  BSU captured five individual titles and a relay victory in the 32-event meet.

All-American sprinter Kristi Buerkle (Sr., Stacy, Minn.) led the way for the BSU women.   Already the owner of BSU’s 200-, 300-, 400-meter dash records along with having her name associated on the school’s 4x400-meter relay mark, Buerkle broke a eight-year-old standard in the 600-meter dash Saturday en route to top honors in the event.  The senior broke the tape in a time of 1:36.53 to trim more than a second from a mark Shelby Hougen set in 2002 (1:37.61).

In addition, Buerkle ran a 25.66 in the 200-meter dash to capture individual honors in that event.

The Bemidji State men were paced by sophomore multi-event athlete T.J. Juell (So., Redwood Falls, Minn.)  The sophomore grabbed first place in the 55-meter dash and the long jump (21-05.25) while picking up fourth place in the pole vault (13-04.50).

His time of 6.59 in the 55 was good enough to nip teammate Jacob Nelson at the line (6.67) as the Beavers finished one-two in the event.

Also on the track, sophomore Mark Buerkle (Stacy, Minn.) turned in a 36.80 to capture 300-meter honors, Eric Schauer (Jr., Langdon, N.D.) placed second in the 600-meters with a time of 1:25.75, Nelson also broke the tape at the end of the 200-meter dash in 23.38, while Sam Bofferding (Sr., Marshall, Minn.) was right on his heel to finish second (23.34).

In addition, the BSU men’s 4x400-meter team earned a win in its event turning in a time of 3:34.37.

The Beavers now break for the holidays before returning to action Jan. 8 when they host the 2011 BSU Alumni Meet.  The annual event is set for a 3 p.m. start at the Gillett Fitness/Recreation Center.
