Buerkle and Nelson are tabbed NSIC Athletes of the Week
BURNSVILLE, Minn. - Bemidji State University sprinters Kristi Buerkle (Sr., Stacy, Minn.) and Jacob Nelson (Fr., Pierz, Minn.) have been named Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Indoor Track Athletes of the Week.  The announcement from the league came on the heels of the Beavers’ first competition of the 2011 season.

Buerkle, an All-America sprinter and 2011 NSIC Preseason Track Athlete of the Year, kicked off the 2011 indoor track and field season with a pair of victories at the College of St. Scholastica’s Mini Meet Dec. 4. The senior captured individual 200-meter dash honors with a time of 25.66 before taking first in the 600-meter dash with a BSU school record time of 1:36.53, trimming more than a second from a mark Shelby Hougen set in 2002 (1:37.61).

Buerkle now owns BSU indoor records at the 60-, 200- (25.25), 300- (40.25), 400- (54.76), 600- (1:36.53) and 800-meter (2:19.11) distances.

BSU newcomer Nelson earned a victory in the 200-meter dash at the meet clocking a time of 23.38, while he was second to teammate T.J. Juell (So., Redwood Falls, Minn.) in the 55M dash with a time of 6.67.

Sharing NSIC honors with Buerkle and Nelson this week are the University of Mary’s Melissa Walker and Ben Jacobson, who were named as the league female and male field athletes of the week, respectively.

Idle over the semester break, the BSU men’s and women’s track and field teams return to action Jan. 8 when they host the 2011 BSU Alumni Meet.  The annual event is set for a 3 p.m. start at the Gillett Fitness/Recreation Center.
