Buerkle leads Beavers at Super 8 Open
BEMIDJI, Minn. (Gillett Recreation/Fitness Center) -- The Bemidji State University indoor track and field teams captured eight event titles Saturday as the team hosted the Super 8 Open at the Gillett Recreation/Fitness Center.

Senior sprinter Kristi Buerkle (Stacy, Minn.) led all BSU athletes with a pair of wins.  In the 200-meter dash, the 2010 indoor All-America performer broke the tape in 26.24 in her first try at the 200-meter sprint this indoor season, while she posted the fastest time in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) this season finishing first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.02.

In addition to the sprint victories by Buerkle, Taylor Sautbine (So., Tamarack, Minn.) finished second in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.64 and newcomer Ashley Larva (Fr., Floodwood, Minn.) posted a time of 28.33 to take third in the 200.

The BSU women also took first place in the 4x200 and 4x400-meter dashes clocking times of 1:53.98 and a season-best 4:12.72, respectively.

On the field, Lisa Williams (Fr., Onamia, Minn.) was the Beavers’ top competitor clearing 9-06.00 in the pole vault to claim second place.

Jacob Nelson (Fr., Pierz, Minn.) posted a win in the 200-meter dash and finished first in the 60 to lead the BSU men in the open.  The rookie turned in a 7.13 in his first shot at the 60-meter dash this season before he ran a season-best 23.19 in the 200 to edge teammate Sam Bofferding (Sr., Marshall, Minn.), who finished second with a 23.41.  Both Players sit among the top 10 times in the 200 this indoor season.

In addition to Nelson’s sprint victory, fellow newcomer Andrew Roiger (Fr., Dawson, Minn.) claimed the best time in the 400-meter dash with a time of 53.04, Marc Sizer (So., St. Peter, Minn.) posted a season-best 8.96 in the 60-meter hurdles to finish second and move up to sixth in the NSIC this season and the Beavers’ 4x200-meter relay team clocked a time of 1:39.65 to win the 800-meter relay.

Jimmy Plain (Fr., Wyoming, Minn.) scored a pair of top two finishes in the jumping events to pace the BSU men’s field competitors.  The freshman cleared 6-00.75 in the high jump to edge teammate Paul Wagner (So., Fisher, Minn.) for first in the high jump and stretched the tape to 43-03.75 for second place in the triple jump. In addition, Raphael Gelo (So., Kabetogama, Minn.) recorded a season-best 14-06.00 in the pole vault to grab second place and move to third on the NSIC’s 2011 indoor top 10, while senior Logan Robinson (Lino Lakes, Minn.) placed third in the weight throw with a 2011-best toss of 45-06.50.

The Beavers’ indoor track and field teams will be back in action next weekend as they travel to Superior, Wis. to compete in the University of Wisconsin-Superior’s Blizzard Open.  The event is set to begin at 12:00 p.m. at the Marcovich Wellness Center.
