Ohman and Gelo garner Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week honors
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University outdoor track and field athletes Michelle Ohman (So., Prior Lake, Minn.) and Raphael Gelo (So., Kabetogama, Minn) have been named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week after recording outstanding athletic performances during the week of April 25-May 1.

Ohman was one of Bemidji State’s bright spots April 29 as members of the team competed at Simpson College’s Kip Jarvin Open in Indianola, Iowa.  The sophomore turned in a personal-best 400-meter dash time, clocking 59.69 seconds to garner fourth place. In addition, she ran a leg of the BSU women’s 4x100-meter relay team that crossed the finish line in third place. Ohman and teammates Ashley Larva (Fr., Floodwood, Minn.), Taylor Sautbine (So., Tamarack, Minn.) and Kristi Buerkle (Stacy, Minn.) recorded a 2011-best mark of 49.62 and came within four-tenths of a second from the school record (49.27) in the event.

This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week selection is the first of Ohman’s career and marks the eighth occasion a member of the BSU women’s track and field team has been recognized during the 2010-11 campaign. She follows Buerkle, who is a six-time recipient of the award this season, as well as last week’s honoree Larva.

Gelo won the pole vault at the Kip Jarvin Open, clearing 16 feet, 4 3/4 inches, sailing beyond a 16 year-old BSU men’s outdoor record and provisionally qualifying for the 2011 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the process. The sophomore broke the previous school record of 16 feet, 1 inch set by Todd Williams in 1995.

Gelo’s record-setting mark ranks him ninth in the country and first in the NSIC.

Gelo’s award marks the sixth time a member of the BSU men’s track and field team has been selected for Beaver Pride’s weekly honor this year, while it stands as the second of the season (Mar. 2) for the sophomore.  He follows teammates Jacob Nelson (Jan. 19), Tandy Juell (Feb. 16 and April 13) and Brian Leonhardt (April 27), who where previously honored by Beaver Pride in 2010-11.

The BSU men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams continue a busy week of competition Saturday as they travel to Moorhead, Minn., the site of the 2011 NSIC Outdoor Championships, to compete in Minnesota State University, Moorhead’s Ron Masanz Invitational.  The event will serve as the teams’ final tune-up before competing in the conference championships May 13-14.
