School records fall at Ron Masanz Track and Field Classic
MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Bemidji State University outdoor track and field teams captured one event title and posted three school records Saturday at the Ron Masanz Track and Field Classic in Moorhead, Minn.

In the team’s final tune-up for the 2011 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Championships May 13-14, captain Kristi Buerkle (Stacy, Minn.) paced the BSU women’s team.  The senior finished first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.46 seconds and although she took third place in the 200-meter dash, she trimmed nearly two-tenths of a second from her own school record time in the event, clocking a time of 24.46 seconds.  The time provisionally qualified Buerkle for the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championships held at the end of May.

In addition, Buerkle anchored the Beavers’ 4-by-400 and 4-by-100-meter relay teams to second and third place finishes, respectively.  Buerkle and teammates Ciarra Robinson (So., Lino Lakes, Minn.), Michelle Ohman (So., Prior Lake, Minn.) and Kirstin Maras (Jr., Ramsey, Minn.) turned in a season-best in the 4x400 (3 minutes, 57.27 seconds), while for the second time this week, Buerkle, Robinson, Ohman and Taylor Sautbine (Fr., Tamarack, Minn.) recorded a school record in the 4x100 placing third with a time of 48.90 seconds.

Ohman also took third individually in the 800-meter run, crossing the line in 2 minutes, 23.06 seconds.

Brian Leonhardt (So., Blaine, Minn.) led the BSU men with a pair of top three finishes in the field events.  The sophomore stretched the tape to a 2011-best 53 feet, 1/4 inch to place third in the shot put and he capped the day with a hammer throw mark of 177 feet, 6 inches.  The toss not only netted the Blaine, Minn. native third place in the event, he also broke a three-year-old school record set by former Beaver All-America performer Joe Remitz (177-0) in 2008.

Both Mark Buerkle (So., Stacy, Minn.) and Raphael Gelo (So., Kabetogama, Minn.) posted second-place finishes in their respective primary events. M. Buerkle turned in a season-best time of 49.66 seconds in the in the 400-meter dash, while Gelo cleared 15 feet, 9 1/4 inches in the pole vault to claim runner-up honors.

The duo also combine forced with teammates Tandy Juell (So., Redwood Falls, Minn.) and Sam Bofferding (Sr., Marshall, Minn.)  to post the squad’s best mark of the 2011 season and place second in the 4-by-100-meter relay with a time of 42.89 seconds

Sophomore Marc Sizer (St., Peter, Minn.) capped the day with the Beavers’ final top three finish posting a time of 15.81 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles.

The Bemidji State men’s and women’s track and field teams next travel to Aberdeen, S.D. and Clark Swisher Activities Complex May 13-14, when the teams will compete in the NSIC Championships.
