Barker and Lopez record personal-bests to headline BSU at MSU Open

MANKATO, Minn. (Meyers Fieldhouse) -- Bemidji State University track and field newcomers Vanessa Rae Lopez and Jada Barker each set personal bests while leading the Beavers’ 4x400-meter relay team to a season-best time Saturday at the MSU Open in Mankato, Minn.

Lopez posted the best individual finish of the day, clocking a personal-best 10:59.33 in the 3,000-meter run to cross the finish line in fifth place. She also placed seventh in the mile run, turning in a personal-best 5:23.09—just 1.30 seconds off the BSU school-record pace set by Nicole Crummy (5:21.39) a year ago.

Barker’s personal-best came in the preliminary round of the 60-meer dash. The freshman turned in a time of 7.95 seconds to qualify for the semifinal round, but didn’t advance to the finals clocking an 8.01 in her second race. Her preliminary time was not only a season-best; it also put her just 0.07 from a school record in the event. She also finished seventh in the 200-meer dash with a personal-best time of 26.22.

In addition, Barker and Lopez teamed up with Christa Benson and Alex Coleman to post a season-best 4x400-meter relay time. The quartet posted the 10th fastest time in the NSIC this season, clocking a time of 4:13.40.

The Beavers will be in action again Feb. 4 when they travel to Duluth, Minn. for the Lake Superior Challenge.
