Record-breaking 4x100-meter performance paces BSU at NSIC Championships

WINONA, Minn. (Paul Giel Field) -- The Bemidji State University track and field team capped its 2018 outdoor season Saturday competing in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championships. The Beavers placed 13th with a total score of 14.50, scoring in four different events highlighted by a school record in the 4x100-meter relay.

In a weather-shortened championship, competitors were ranked according to season bests and seeded into the finals. BSU has a total of 20 student-athletes competing in 14 events.

The Beavers’ 4x100-meter relay team of Cheri’a Adams, Kelsey Hurley, Jada Barker, Venice Stewart combined to break the school record just two weeks after tying the previous mark of 47.37. The quartet clocked a time of 47.17 to win their heat and place fourth, crossing the line just 0.23 after Augustana University (46.94).

Stewart also scored three points in the 200-meter dash. She recorded a time of 25.10 to place sixth finishing 0.60 ahead of teammate Jada Barker, who took 13th.

In the field events, Gena Baklund led the charge placing fifth in the hammer throw, turning in a distance of 158-04. Christa Benson also recorded a fifth place finish clearing 5-02.50 in the high jump.

The event brings a successful 2018 outdoor season to an end. Despite fielding a young roster, the Beavers made strides in almost every meet, which included highlights such as Baklund setting the program’s hammer throw record five times, the Venice Stewart breaking the 100-meter dash mark and the Beavers’ 4x100-meter relay team equaling the BSU record in that event.

The University of Mary won the NSIC Championship totaling 157 points to take a 47-point edge over second place Minnesota State University, Mankato.
