Stewart and 4x400m relay records highlight successful UND Indoor Open

GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- Sophomore Venice Stewart and the 4x400-meter relay team highlighted a successful showing for the Bemidji State University women’s track and field team Saturday at the UND Indoor Open as two program records were broken. Stewart broke her previous BSU record in the 60m dash while setting an NCAA provisional qualifying marks.

The 4x400m relay team of Christa Benson, Beatrice Kjelland, Jada Barker and Stewart set the 4x400m relay record with a first-place time of 3:58.30. In total, the Beavers brought home 11 top-five finishes.

Stewart took two wins in the 60m dash, with a BSU record and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 7.67, and the 200m dash, with a time of 25.04. She held the previous 60m and 200m dash records before breaking them Saturday.

Five Beavers qualified for the finals of the 60m dash with four top-five finishes in the event. Joining Stewart was Kjelland in second with a personal record time of 7.74, Barker in fourth with a personal record time of 7.86, sophomore Jonae Bond in fifth with a time of 7.93 and sophomore Cheri’A Adams in seventh with a time of 8.19.

Stewart, Barker, Kjelland and Bond also finished within the top seven of the 200m dash, led by Stewart. Barker finished second with a time of 25.41, followed by Kjelland with a third-place and personal record time of 25.87 while Bond set a personal record with a ninth-place time of 26.76.

Benson took a top-five finish in the 60m hurdles, setting a personal record time of 9.35 to finish fourth. She also took a fourth-place finish in the high jump with a mark of 5-feet-1.00-inch.

Bemidji State continues its indoor season Saturday, Feb. 2 at the Lake Superior Challenge in Duluth, Minn.
