Track and Field takes second behind program record at Dakota Classic

FARGO, N.D. -- The Bemidji State University women’s track and field program was led to a second-place finish at the Dakota Classic on Friday behind a record-setting performance from sophomore Ryne Prigge in the one mile run. Prigge broke the program record by less than one second while sophomore thrower Zoe Christensen placed herself fourth all-time in the weight throw.

Prigge took fourth in the one mile run with a time of 5:19.27, breaking the record of former Beaver Vanessa Rae Lopez who set the record in 2017 with a time of 5:20.62. In the same event, senior Kristen Petron came in fifth with a personal record time of 5:26.13.

Christensen took ninth in the weight throw with a mark of 51-feet-2.50-inches, about six feet shy of the program record set in 2008 by Sheena Devine. Christensen holds the fourth, fifth and sixth best weight throw marks in program history. She also led BSU in the shot put Friday with a toss of 45-00.25 to set her second personal record of the day.

In total, BSU finished with 16 top-five finishes in their respective events, including senior Jada Barker who took second and freshman Janice Cole who took third in the 200-meter dash. Bemidji State saw 37 student-athletes set personal record marks through the day.

Bemidji State closes out its weekend of events Saturday at The Opener hosted by The College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn.
