Hammer throw record broken as Beavers open outdoor season

WAYNE, Neb. (Memorial Track) -- Junior thrower Zoe Carrasco (Christensen) wasted no time to break another program record as she did so in the hammer throw during Bemidji State University track & field’s first outdoor meet of the season at the Wildcat Outdoor Classic in Wayne, Neb.

Carrasco took sixth in the hammer throw on Friday with a BSU outdoor record toss of 174-feet-06-inches (53.18 meters), which ranks sixth in NCAA Division II this season and is a national provisional qualifying mark. The previous BSU record belonged to Gena Baklund with a mark of 172-09 set in April 2019.

Bemidji State’s first outdoor meet of the season also provided 17 top-five finishes, including event wins by junior mid-distance runner Ryne Prigge, sophomore sprinter Janice Cole and freshman sprinter Alaina Hall. Cole earned first place in both the 400m dash with a time of 59.50 and the 200m dash with a time of 26.96. Prigge won the 800m run with a time of 2:21.31 and Hall won the 100m dash with a time of 12.44.

The Beavers saw numerous personal records set as 18 Beavers took part in their first ever outdoor meet collegiately. The group of 18 first-timers set 30 personal record marks while 34 in total were set through the meet.
