Two wins, SMR record highlight Track & Field weekend opener in Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Bemidji State University track & field team opened its weekend with a bang as the program’s sprint medley relay record was broken and two Beavers nabbed event wins between the Drake Relays and the Kip Janvrin Open.

The sprint medley relay team of Janice Cole, Alaina Hall, Maryse Mbenoun and Ryne Prigge began the day at the Drake Relays with a second-place finish in the event with a new BSU outdoor record time of 4:08.46, breaking the previous record by almost five seconds. The previous record was set at the 2012 Drake Relays with a time of 4:13.42 by Taylor Sautbine, Ashley Larva, Michelle Ohman and Kirsten Maras.

Junior thrower Zoe Carrasco and Cole earned BSU’s event wins at the Kip Janvrin Open as five Bemidji State student-athletes in total competed. Cole started with a win in the 400 meter dash with a time of 59.10 while Carrasco brought home the shot put title with an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark of 14.29m (46-feet-10.75-inches). This is the first time she hit the NCAA provisional qualifying mark this season.

Sophomore thrower Tierra Doss also competed in the shot with a fifth-place toss of 12.47m (40-11.00). Mbenoun ran in the 400m dash at the Janvrin Open with a seventh-place time of 2:21.02, setting a new personal record in the process. Hall also took seventh in her event, running 12.33 in the 100m dash.

Bemidji State will continue its weekend with throws in the shot put and hammer throw by Carrasco at the Drake Relays starting at 8 a.m. while the remainder of the team will take part in the Winona State Meet beginning at 11 a.m.
